Skincare Tips To Support Maturing Skin!
by Simone Ajani
Everyone ages. It’s part of life, and it’s a very beautiful piece of each person’s experience. As we age, we start to encounter changes in our bodies that we’ve never seen before, which can feel concerning! If you’ve never experienced something, going through it for the first time can feel shocking. One of the changes that I’ve started to notice as I’m getting older is how different my skin looks and feels. You may start to notice your skin changing too. Maybe it feels dry or it appears a little more dull.
As we age, our skin’s cell turnover slows down. This means that our skin doesn’t bounce back or literally BOUNCE like it used to. With all of that said, there is no need to panic. People have been having birthdays since the beginning of time, so we’ve had a lot of time to figure out how to support our skin as it matures. Here are a few ways you can start to invest a little more in your skincare as it evolves.
Go to The Dermatologist
Like I said, don’t panic. There are doctors who are literally trained to help us navigate changes with our skin. Making a dermatologist appointment can be a great way to start the conversation about the changes you’re noticing in your skin and how to support them. Your dermatologist can share skincare lines that may work well for you as well as any treatments that may be a good fit!
Cleanse Morning & Night
It’s important to cleanse our skin morning and night. Put the makeup wipes down! We want to pull and manipulate our skin as little as possible, which means that those little wipes pulling at our skin are not our friend anymore. You especially want to focus on moisturizing your skin in the evening. When we sleep and toss and turn, our skin gets taken on a bit of a ride. Product gets wiped off in our sleep and can leave our skin dry (think of it like a face mask, when you wear it all day, your skin gets dry. Remember our post on maskne?). Make the switch to a silk pillow case as soon as possible! A good rule of thumb is to look like a glazed donut before turning in for the night.
Exfoliate
Since your skin cell turnover is slowing down, there are dead skin cells sitting on the top layer of your face. Not to worry, exfoliation can help to remove this layer and reveal your glowing skin underneath! There are exfoliators with acids that can help, but first, consult your dermatologist or esthetician about what may work best for you.
Add Hydration
As your skin matures, you may notice that it starts to feel a bit more dry. Maybe you had oily skin before and now you notice your same products aren’t leaving your skin as moisturized as they once did. Don’t worry, there are ways to get more moisture into your skin. One of the best ways is to start to use a serum. Serums are a great way to get a lot of great ingredients onto your skin to slow the signs of aging.
Pay More Attention To Your Eyes and Neck
Our eyes and necks tend to be the first places where we notice signs of aging. As a result, this is where we want to pay a lot of attention but also treat with the most gentle touch. If you haven’t found a great eye cream, find one and commit to using it daily. Use your ring finger to apply, as this is your weakest finger and will provide the lightest touch. When looking at ingredients, look for one with niacinimide, as it will help to prevent the look of fine lines. Also, never forget your neck! Bringing your products down to your neck is so important. Your neck and chest need all of that moisture too, so don’t forget them!
Experiment Less
When you’re young, it’s so much fun to try every new product that comes out and to experiment with what we like. It’s all part of the skincare journey! However, as our skin matures, it doesn’t like as much experimentation. Finding a line that you love and sticking with a few of their best products is a great way to treat your skin, identify the ingredients it likes and not shock your skin with so much change.
Don’t Skip Sunscreen
I know you hear this all the time, but seriously…don’t skip it. As our skin matures, you may notice more dark spots pop up. You may also notice that they don’t go away as quickly or as easily anymore. Using SPF regularly supports the prevention of these dark spots.
